19 Years, 3 Websites

Finite Wisdom was founded in the spring of 2000. In the 19 years that we’ve been in business, we have had exactly three websites, created in the years 2000, 2010 and 2015. Let’s take a quick look at them:

When the business was founded, this was our very first attempt at a website. As you can see, this website was very light on visual design and equally light on meaningful information. Despite these shortcomings, this first website remained in place for a decade.

After that first decade had passed and I had some time to spare, I engaged a professional designer to put together a new website design that was more visually compelling. We also added translations in Spanish and French, as well as a dedicated mobile version. On the downside, this new website remained light on meaningful information.

Five years later, I decided that it was time to expand greatly the information about Finite Wisdom that’s available on our website. I switched to using Squarespace, a website builder application, which allowed me to put a minimal design in place and then focus solely on the content of the website, with a goal toward making it thorough and meaningful. The site works on all devices and platforms, thanks to the inherent responsive design of all Squarespace websites.

Is it useful?

Having been tinkering with three iterations of our website for 19 years now, I must admit that in those 19 years we have not generated a single lead from an organic search of the Internet at large. In other words, no one has ever contacted me and said “Hey, I ran across your website and I was wondering if you could help us out.”

Instead, the website has become a resource that a potential client might use to vet us and determine whether we’ve really got some technical chops. But, that potential client will not come to our attention passively, via that organic search — we need to find those potential clients in proactive fashion.
